October 8, 2019 — Herndon, VA  The new vehicle Wrong-Way Solution™ from All Traffic Solutions (ATS) brings to the market extremely accurate all-weather detection capabilities, as well as a profound level of integration with traveler warning and traffic management systems. This readily portable device can be used at permanent locations or moved as desired. It provides a robust and very cost-effective solution to the near-daily — and often fatal — problem of drivers who take a wrong turn and find themselves heading at speed into oncoming traffic streams.

The Wrong-Way Solution can be deployed at all points on the road network. It uses Lidar to give the most accurate performance in all weather and light conditions. Supporting video technology confirms the system’s accuracy.
Cloud-based communication enables real-time interaction via multiple channels — alerts and notifications can be passed to the drivers of the errant and other vehicles directly using flashing beacons and real-time messages on variable message signs; to designated authorities using email or text messaging; to local 511 traveler information systems and traffic management centers; and to social media.

“The fatality rate for wrong-way driving incidents is up to 50 times that of other types of incidents. They are a very serious and depressingly common problem,” says Andy Souders, President and CEO of ATS.

“The Wrong-Way Solution gives those involved in reducing fatalities and serious injuries as part of Vision Zero and other initiatives a very powerful and dependable solution. The detection technology we use ensures 24/7 accuracy and the supporting Cloud-based communication provides near-instant notification to a wide range of interested parties.

“The system already has its first customer, so we’re already on the way to saving lives.”

The development effort does not stop there, Souders notes. An ambition for the future is to continue to develop the technology to allow direct intervention inside the vehicle, perhaps having it automatically pull over and disable itself. This will enable ATS to offer a further step-change in traffic safety performance.
