CHANTILLY, Va. – September 23, 2024 All Traffic Solutions (ATS) awarded a Shield 12 radar speed sign to Trenton Police Department in Michigan through the company’s ATS Gives Back initiative.
All Traffic Solutions is committed to creating safe streets and neighborhoods nationwide with their products and software. Over the years, ATS found that police departments in smaller communities have a need for All Traffic Solutions signs but lack the necessary funds and may not qualify for grants. The ATS Gives Back goal is to bridge this gap by donating a data-collecting radar speed display sign to a community in need each month. ATS Gives Back recipients also receive a subscription to TraffiCloud®, a secure online portal for remote equipment management and ready-made traffic reports.
The Trenton Police Department, located just south of Detroit, Michigan, covers seven square miles and is home to over 18,000 residents. The police department applied for the ATS Gives Back program and submitted three additional letters of support from key community members. The initial application was from Trenton’s Chief of Police, Mike Hawkins. In the application, he explained that the city has five schools within the district they patrol and would greatly benefit from a Shield 12 radar speed sign. In addition to the Chief of Police, Superintendent of Trenton Public Schools Douglas B. Mentzer submitted a letter of support citing two recent accidents involving a car and a pedestrian that occurred just one month apart. These consecutive accidents shook the community and emphasized their growing safety concerns and need for a solution to help control speeding.
Since receiving their Shield 12 radar speed sign, the Trenton Police Department has used their new tool as promised. They placed the sign on Marian Drive, next to the local elementary and middle school, where over 1,000 students travel to and from school daily. Chief Hawkins states that their new Shield 12 radar speed sign is “a constant reminder to slow down and help eliminate any future car/pedestrian accidents.” In addition, Senator Darrin Camilleri, a Trenton resident, appreciated their new sign, stating, “Visual reminders from Shield display signs are proven to reduce traffic speed and prevent accidents. The cost of these signs is a small investment in relation to the importance of traffic safety and protecting our children.”
